Reflexology is an ancient holistic treatment that targets pressure points. In this edition of Wellness, YNN's Jill Urban can sooth and heal your body.

There are reflex points in your hands and feet, and they correspond to every part of your body," explained Chantel Lucier, ARCB Certified Reflexologist. "So by applying pressure to these points, it sends the message through the body to the corresponding organ or glad or system to relax."

Lucier is the manager of Angel Feet Reflexology in Manhattan. She imagines reflexology as an internal massage. A regular massage deals with the fascia and muscles, while reflexology deals with internal structures such as organs and glands.

It’s all based on a chart or map that associates spots on the hands and feet to specific internal systems.

Lucier said, "So you can imagine the entire body is just reflected on the hands and feet, so if you were to hold your hands or feet together where the liver is or the spleen or the adrenal glands are exactly in proportion in the hand and feet."

By applying pressure using a specific finger walking technique, a technical triggers a reflexology point to send a message to the targeted area. Lucier says it increases circulation and blood flow.

"When you feel a reflexologist applying pressure to your hands or feet, they are going towards a gathering of nerve fibers that change the tissue texture, and break it up so it can send the message to that corresponding area to relax," noted Lucier.

Although reflexology can be done at a salon or spa, it can also be done at home.

"You can absolutely do it at home, you can get a little map from any health food store or online, and I would say just that adrenal gland reflex if you are feeling stressed out, you can just target that mound here, that’s the adrenal gland reflex, and you can just press here and hold it," demonstrated Lucier.

If you are looking to feel good from head to toe, you may want to put your feet in good hands and give reflexology a try. ClientIP:, UserAgent: CCBot/2.0 ( Profile: TWCSAMLSP
